What are Corneo Colosseum Battle Challenges
In Chapter 9 – The Town That Never Sleeps, you will discovered the Corneo Colosseum, which will allow you to partake in several challenging battles that will have you taking on a wide array of enemies. The use Items will be prohibited during battles, apart from a brief moment between enemies where your party automatically gets an additional 50% HP and 30% MP.
Winning these battles won’t leave you empty handed though, as you’ll find a number of unique rewards on offer such as all new Limit Breakers for each character, along with EXP, and Skill Points.
At first, the Colosseum Battle Challenges will only be available to Cloud and Aerith after defeating the Hell House in Chapter 9. And the only available battles are Cloud vs. Wild Animals, Aerith vs. Wild Animals, and Two-Person Team vs. Slum Outlaws.
Unfortunately, Aerith will not be able to access the Corneo Colosseum Battle Challenges during Chapter 14. So, be sure to finish her challenges while you can in Chapter 9, otherwise any of Aerith’s unfinished battles will result in you having to revisit the Colosseum after you have completed the game. You will have to play through most of Chapter 9 again to reach the colosseum again.
It is worth mentioning, that the Battle Challenges will ramp up their difficulty as you climb higher through the four ranks, but there is no Hard-mode difficulty for the Colosseum.
Materia – Based on upcoming enemy weaknesses go with Ice Materia and Wind Materia (Note: Lightning is effective against the Blugu but since it’s also weak to wind you’ll be covered!). Combining Ice and Elemental Materia onto your weapons so that your attacks will have ice damage damage as well since several enemies are weak to it. Another option is Ice and Magnify so you can hit multiple opponents at once. ATB Boost Materia is recommended so you can start with lots of ATB so you can use abilities (to hit multiple enemies at once) or do higher damage.
Equipment – Whistlewind Scarf allows you to enter the battle with a slightly filled ATB gauge OR Headband – Become immune to sleep because the Blugu can use Slumber Spume and since you are fighting alone, falling asleep can be fatal.
vs. Wild Animals Round 1
You will face 2 Wererats in this battle. Take them out quickly! They’re weaker enemies so triple slash, a magnified attack, and/or some ice magic will be their demise. Their attacks are physical so keep your distance when casting spells can go in for the kill with physical attacks.
- Stealable items: Antidote
vs. Wild Animals Round 2
You will face 1 Blugu and 2 Gorger enemies. Keep your distance from Blugu because its Slumber Spume attack will put you to sleep. And with no one to bail you out you’ll be a sitting duck if you get hit. Gorgers focus on physical attacks which can be dodged or blocked. Be careful because they can latch onto you, rendering you helpless.
- Blugu Weakness: Lightning and Wind
- Stealable Items: Smelling Salts
- Gorger Weakness: Ice and Magic
- Stealable Items: Antidote
vs. Wild Animals Round 3
You will face 2 Guard Dog enemies. You remember these puppers (and their powerful throat clamp attack). Blast them with ice magic to do good damage and rapidly fill their stagger gauge.
vs. Wild Animals Round 4
You will face 1 Grashtrike and 1 Hedgehog Pie. Strike the Grashtrike with Ice magic to rapidly fill their stagger gauge and keep in mind that they’ll use a barrier when their health gets low. Ice attacks are also perfect for Hedgehog Pie. Keep your distance to dodge its fire attacks.
- Stealable Items: Spiderweb
- Hedgehog Pie Weakness: Ice
vs. Wild Animals Round 5
You will face 1 Lesser Drake in the 5th and final round. Hit the Lesser Drake with Wind Magic to fill its stagger and lower it to the ground making it easier to attack.
- Lesser Drake Weakness: Wind
- Stealable Items: Phoenix Down
- Cloud – Legacy: Ascension
- Aerith – Legacy: Planet’s Protection
- Barret – Legacy: Catastrophe
- Tifa – Legacy: Dolphin Flurry
Two-Person Team vs. Slum Outlaws
This match costs 200 gil to participate in.
Every single enemy is weak to fire so equip fire to both your party members. Fire + Elemental Materia to infuse Cloud‘s Weapon with Fire. ATB Boost to fill the ATB bar. Fire + Magnify to take down multiple enemies at once. Equipment – Whistlewind Scarf allows you to enter the battle with a slightly filled ATB gauge
Tips for Fighting Bandit and Corneo Lackey
Bandits are pretty simplistic and will swing their weapon at you. Be sure to use fire magic to rapidly fill their stagger gauge. Corneo Lackeys are more advanced. Physical attacks include Open Fire, Grenade, Full Nelson, and Wild Stab but they also have an Orb of Gravity Magic attack. Once their health gets low, take them out quick because they will drink a concoction that makes it so their stagger gauge will no longer be filled.
vs. Slum Outlaws Round 1
You’ll face 1 Bandit and 2 Corneo Lackeys.
- Corneo Lackey Weakness: Fire
- Stealable Items: Adrenaline
vs. Slum Outlaws Round 2
You’ll face 1 Corneo Lackey.
- Corneo Lackey Weakness: Fire
- Stealable Items: Adrenaline
vs. Slum Outlaws Round 3
You’ll face 2 Bandits and 1 Corneo Lackey.
Tips for Fighting The Huntsman
The Huntsman’s attacks are all physical but the Stun Baton will leave you, unsurprisingly stunned. He’ll knock you down with his riot shield as well. The pro of having 2 party members is its easier to get around his shield to attack him from behind. Use fire magic and once he’s staggered you can go in with more varied attacks
vs. Slum Outlaws Round 4
You’ll face The Huntsman.
- The Huntsman Weakness: Fire
vs. Slum Outlaws Round 5
You’ll face The Huntsman and 4 Bandits.
- The Huntsman Weakness: Fire
Two-Person Team vs. Slum Outlaws Rewards
Every enemy is weak to Fire or Lightning in this challenge, but the “bosses” are weak to Lightning only. Make sure to equip both Materia. We suggest attaching Magnify + Fire/Lightning and Elemental + Fire/Lightning (either Magic Materia with either Support Materia) Attach ATB Boost to fill the ATB bar at the start of each round. Equipment – Whistlewind Scarf allows you to enter the battle with a slightly filled ATB gauge
vs. Shinra Thugs Round 1
You’ll face a Sentry Gun Prototype, a Security Office, and 2 Grenadier.
- Sentry Gun Weakness: Lightning
- Security Officer Weakness: Fire
- 2x Grenadier Weakness: Fire
vs. Shinra Thugs Round 2
You’ll face two Flame Troopers.
- 2x Flame Trooper Weakness: Fire
Run in a wide circle to kite the troopers until they’re next to each other to make them easier to take out with less attacks.
vs. Shinra Thugs Round 3
You’ll face one Shock Trooper and two Sentry Rays.
- Shock Trooper Weakness: Fire
- 2x Sentry Ray Weakness: Lightning
Take out the Sentry Rays first. They’re a nuisance from afar and should go down fairly quickly.
vs. Shinra Thugs Round 4
You’ll face two Slug-Ray and one Riot Trooper.
- 2x Slug-Ray Weakness: Lightning
- Riot Trooper Weakness: Fire
vs. Shinra Thugs Round 5
You’ll face one Sweeper and one Sentry Launcher.
- Sweeper Weakness: Lightning
- Sentry Launcher Weakness: Lightning
These are both weak to Lightning magic, so use Thundaga attached to Magnify if you have it. Take out the Sentry Launcher first, but be wary of its AEO electricity attacks.
Three-Person Team vs. Shinra Warriors
The enemies in this challenge are more varies, so make sure you have Fire, Ice, and Lightning Materia. Lightning and Ice make up the brunt of weaknesses in the final two rounds, so attach those to Magnify and Elemental. We recommend attaching Ice to Magnify because all enemies in the final and most difficult fight are weak to Ice. Attach ATB Boost to fill the ATB bar at the start of each round. Equipment – Whistlewind Scarf allows you to enter the battle with a slightly filled ATB gauge
Make sure to spread your useful Materia between all three party members. Only 30% of MP is recovered between rounds, so you don’t want to rely on just a single party member to dish out all the magic.
vs Shinra Warriors Round 1
- Elite Security Officer Weakness: Fire
- Elite Shock Trooper Weakness: Fire
vs Shinra Warriors Round 2
You will face a Helitrooper and two Cripshay.
- Helitrooper Weakness: Fire and Wind
- x2 Cripshay Weakness: Ice
If the Helitrooper takes to the air, use Barret to shoot from afar or use Fire or Wind magic.
vs Shinra Warriors Round 3
You will face a Sahagin and two Elite Grenadiers.
- x2 Elite Grenadier Weakness: Fire
vs Shinra Warriors Round 4
You’ll fight a large group of enemies this time.
- Scissorclaw Weakness: Ice
- Laser Canon Weakness: Electricity
- Elite Riot Trooper Weakness: Electricity
- Sentry Gun Weakness: Electricity
vs Shinra Warriors Round 5
You’ll fight a Queen Gastrike and two Venomantis.
- Queen Gastrike Weakness: Ice
- 2x Venomantis Weakness: Ice
Two-Person Team vs Team Payback
You will want Wind, Lightning, and Ice Materia. ‘Wind and Lightning are the more important Materia this time around, but Magnify x Ice will make easy work of Round 1. One of the enemies is completely Immune to Fire, so do not equip Fire Materia. Bring Shiva as a Summon. ATB Boost to fill the ATB bar at the start of each round. Equipment – Whistlewind Scarf allows you to enter the battle with a slightly filled ATB gauge
Make sure to spread your useful Materia between both party members. Only 30% of MP is recovered between rounds, so you don’t want to rely on just a single party member to dish out all the magic.
vs Team Payback Round 1
You’ll face a Hedgehog Pie and a Hedgehog Pie King.
- Hedgehog Pie Weakness: Ice
- Hedgehog Pie King Weakness: Ice
If you equip Ice on Barret, switching to Tifa will cause the Hedgehog Pies to focus on her and group up, giving Barret the opportunity to hit the enemies with Ice.
vs Team Payback Round 2
You’ll face a single Wrath Hound this round.
- Wrath Hound Weakness: Ice
Wait until after it attacks to cast Ice – because there’s a delay, you need to wait for the opportunity to cast it.=
vs Team Payback Round 3
- Chromogger Weakness: Lightning
Take out the Doomrat as fast as possible. The Chromogger is quite slow, so take advantage of this by taking control of Barret and attacking from afar. Pay attention and move out of the way if it approaches you. You should be able to use a Summon in this battle, so pay attention to that gauge.
vs Team Payback Round 4
- Bomb Weakness: Immune to Fire
- Cerulean Drake Weakness: Wind
Take out the Cerulean Drake first – but wait until just after it attacks to cast Aero on it. It will pause in the moment, giving you the opening to land a hit.
The Bomb is trickier. It has no weakness, but is susceptible to stagger while it uses a fire attack. Either switch to the other character after it targets one and attack it from behind, or do well enough at dodging and positioning to get behind it while it tries to attack you.
vs Team Payback Round 5
- Jury-Rigged Cutter Weakness: Lightning
- Mark II Monodrive Weakness: Wind
Mark II Monodrive switches between taking Physical or Magic damage. Take it out first. Make sure to always test with a physical attack first – if you attack it with Magic while its magic barrier is up, you’ll take damage, too.
The Jury-Rigged Cutter’s arms can only be damaged when staggered, but we just focused on its body instead to take it down quickly.
