What is Pokemon HOME?
The Pokemon HOME app is a cloud-based Pokemon storage service that will essentially replace Pokemon Bank. You can link the same Nintendo account to both the Nintendo Switch version and mobile version of Pokemon Home and acess the same Pokemon Boxes on both versions. Once a Pokemon is in Pokemon HOME, it should be able to be transferred to Pokemon Sword and Shield as long as it belongs to the Pokemon Sword and Shield Pokedex.
Pokemon HOME Release Date: When Does Pokemon HOME Come Out?
Announced during the Pokemon Direct in January 2020, Pokemon HOME is set to release in February 2020.

Pokemon HOME Platforms
Pokemon HOME will be available on iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch.
How to Trade with Pokemon Home
You can trade directly from the Pokemon Home app. There are 3 different types of trading you can do.
- Wonder Box
- Global Trading System (GTS)
- Room Trade
- Friend Trade
Wonder Box let’s you Wonder Trade, which functions similarly to Surprise Trade.
Put your Pokemon in the Wonder Box to trade them with people around the world even when you’re not using Pokmeon Home.
There’s no guarantee what you’ll get in exchange for your Pokemon, it’s all about the surprise!
Global Trading System (GTS)
With the GTS, you’ll be able to specify which Pokemon you want to trade and which Pokemon you want to receive (you pick the Pokemon, gender, level, and games) and then get matched with a Trainer whose requests meet your criteria.
You’ll even be able to request Pokemon you haven’t yet registered in Pokemon HOME’s National Pokedex yet.
Room trade is like wonder trading / surprise trading but with a group of up to 20 people.
You don’t know what Pokemon you’ll get until the trade is complete.
Use the Add Friend feature in Pokemon Home to make friends and the trade with them directly.
How to Transfer Your Old Pokemon into Sword and Shield
Check out How to Transfer Old Pokemon to Sword and Shield to see how this works.
However, just because a Pokemon can be transferred to Pokemon HOME, doesn’t mean it can be transferred to Pokemon Sword and Shield. There may be special cases, but these are, so far, unknown.
Take a look at the Pokemon Sword and Shield Pokedex to see which Pokemon will be able to be transferred to Sword and Shield from Pokemon HOME. Keep in mind that more Pokemon will be transferrable when the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass is released (regardless of whether or not you buy the Expansion Pass).
You can see which Pokemon are being added here.
Other Pokemon Home Features
Pokemon will be registered to the National Pokedex when you deposit them in the Boxes in Pokemon HOME. If you move a Pokemon that can Mega Evolve or Gigantamax, these forms will be registered.
You can also use this to check out all the different Dex entries, across various games, in one convenient place.
The mobile version of the app will allow you to check each Pokemon’s Abilities and the moves it can learn.
You can receive Mystery Gifts in Pokemon Home, just like how you can receive Mystery Gifts in Pokemon Sword and Shield.
On the app, the methods are via Local Event Check, Codes, and scanning Code patterns. At the time of writing it’s unclear if some Mystery Gifts will be exclusive to the Pokemon Home App.
Those with the paid premium plan can Judge their Pokemon directly from the app to evaluate their stats. Remember, you can already do this in Pokemon Sword and Shield by unlocking the IV checker. For how to do that, be sure to check out our explainer page.
Here, you can see information about events or games you’ve connected to Pokemon Home. You can also edit your profile with stickers that you earn when meeting certain conditions or completing Challenges.
This function will be available after the initial February 2020 launch of Pokemon Home.
In the mobile version of the app, you can check out how Ranked Battles and various Online Competitions in Pokemon Sword and Shield are going.
You can even see the ranking of the Pokemon being used by them. Battle Data will also show you the records of each Trainer and what moves are popular among competitive Pokemon.
The mobile app will let you see the News, which provides game info and sometimes Mystery Gift Codes. Currently, this information can be found under the News section at the bottom of your Nintendo Switch’s homescreen (but this includes all Nintendo news, not just Pokemon posts).
Pokemon Home Points
The more Pokemon you deposit into Pokemon Home, the more Pokemon HOME points you’ll earn. When using the Nintendo Switch version of Pokemon Home, you can exchange the Pokemon Home Points for BP (Battle Points) to use in the core series games.
