As of April 23rds update, “Jolly Redd” can appear on your island along with his his boat at the northernmost beach on your island (often regarded as the secret beach) if certain parameters are met.
Once the Museum has upgraded to hold an art exhibit, you’ll be invited onto Jolly Redd’s Treasure Trawler to purchase rare items and works of art – at your own risk.
In order for Redd to appear on your island, you must first make some headway into building up your town’s museum. To do this, you will need to donate a total of 60 bugs, fish, and fossils to the museum (these include the donations made to Tom Nook at the start of your deserted island adventure, and the 15 donations Blathers requires to build a proper museum.
This means once the Museum is initially built, you will need 40 more donations.
Once you’ve hit this milestone, Blathers will tell you on the next day that he has begun taking donations for works of art – although he has no place to display them just yet.
Luckily, you’re likely to hear the very next day that a suspicious individual has been seen sailing around the nearby islands.
Once you’ve gotten this announcement, search your island to find Redd (who usually hangs out by the beaches), and he’ll sweet talk you into trying to buy a painting for a crazy price – and then give you that sweet family discount.
Take him up on his offer (don’t worry, this one is genuine), and then donate it to Blathers at the Museum. With a painting in hand, he’ll finally be able to begin the process of upgrading the museum to hold a grant art exhibit on the second floor – which will take a full day to construct.
After Blathers has finished construction of the art exhibit, continue to be on the lookout for Redd – or look for his ship that always docks on the north side of the island at the remote beach – which will usually require a Ladder or terraforming via the Island Designer to get to.
Upon speaking to Redd once more, he’ll invite you to go and board his Treasure Trawler to see more of his wares, and open up his shop for all future visits.
Want to see if Redd is visiting at a glance without searching for him or his ship? Just check your map – and an icon for his Treasure Trawley shop will appear on the north side of your island if he’s present that day!
Redd’s Shop – Art, Furniture, and Forgeries
Much like previous Animal Crossing games, Cousin Redd deals in rare and valuable artworks that he will sell to you each time he visits along with a selection of other furniture items.
While the artwork can be donated to the Museum – some of the four artworks Redd is selling are likely fakes, and it will take a keen eye to detect which one is the real deal, especially in the dingy underbelly of his ship.
Since all the artwork is based off of real famous paintings, sculptures, and other items, you will need to look carefully to see if the art is off in some way – like the character in a portrait facing the wrong way or wearing something different. Luckily, you can always ask to view a painting up close with a better light source, and zoom in to look for discrepancies.
Once you’ve chosen the work of art you believe to be genuine, Redd will lock in your purchase, and refuse to sell the other three artworks (though you are able to buy as much furniture as you want). You won’t get the artwork immediately – instead you’ll have to wait until he mails it to you the next day (along with a prominent reminder of his no-refunds policy).
If you select the right artwork, you can give it to Blathers to display in the Museum, but if you choose the wrong one, Blathers will refuse to display the fake! However, you’re still able to display the forgery anywhere else – inside your home or otherwise.
