Star Wars, Skyrim Actor Max Von Sydow Dies Aged 90

Legendary actor Max Von Sydow, who has played a number of roles in films, TV series and video games, including Star Wars, Game of Thrones and Skyrim, has died at the age of 90, it has been confirmed.”It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow, March 8, 2020,” his agent, Jean Diamond, said in a statement.

The Swedish-born actor received international acclaim for his frequent collaborations with director Ingmar Bergman, including his breakout performance in 1957’s The Seventh Seal, in which he played Antonius Block, a medieval knight who famously played chess with Death.

Von Sydow went on to have a prolific career in Hollywood and international films, with his imposing presence spanning decades on the silver screen. His notable roles included playing Jesus Christ in The Greatest Story Ever Told, Father Lankester Merrin in The Exorcist, Emperor Ming in Flash Gordon, and iconic James Bond villain Blofeld in Never Say Never Again.

In his later years, the veteran actor starred as Lamar Burgess, the main antagonist in the 2002’s Minority Report, Lor San Tekka, the legendary traveller and explorer in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the Three-Eyed Raven in the HBO’s Game of Thrones, a role for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.Outside of his storied film and TV career, Von Sydow earned recognition in the gaming world, especially amongst fans of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, as he narrated the announcement trailer for the fifth chapter in the highly-anticipated Elder Scrolls saga, then voiced Esbern in the video game itself. He also recited lines as Vigo the Carpathian in Ghostbusters: The Video Game and Lor San Tekka in Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
