The Adventure Begins
Repeatedly press A to shake Mario loose! To the right, you’ll see a tree with a magic circle, but you’ll first need to find Olivia to be able to use the 1,000-Fold Arms. Head toward the foreground to travel down the steps. You’ll next encounter Not-Bottomless Hole#1. Olivia will throw you the Confetti Bag. She’ll inform you that you can fill up the hole by using confetti. Confetti can be found scattered across the floor and by hitting flowers, trees, and certain objects with Mario’s Hammer. Head to the background, and hit the tree with the Hammer to make more confetti rain down. Walk over the confetti to pick it up. You’ll get a notification when your bag is full. Once full, head back to the Hole and press ZR three times to repair it.
You’ll notice that the Confetti Bag icon on the left edge of the screen now shows the bag depleted. The icon will show the relative amount of confetti it’s holding. Once full, you’ll still be able to pick up confetti, but it will not be stored. It’s also worth noting that if you have confetti in your bag and you press ZR, Mario will throw confetti where he’s standing. Confetti that’s tossed without an objective nearby (like a hole or enemy) is not lost and magically returns to the bag.
After repairing the hole, continue traveling toward the foreground to find Olivia stuck in the ground. Press and hold A to free her. With Olivia back on your team, you can now return to the magic circle near the tree from earlier. Feel free to hammer trees and flowers to collect more confetti. At the Magic Circle, press X to activate the 1000-Fold Arms. Push the tree toward the background to make a bridge to the next area. Hit the ?-Block to gain a Mushroom item.
Then, make your way toward the right to reach the next area. At the next area, you’ll trigger a cutscene going up the steps. Continue traveling right to access the next area of Whispering Woods. Before exiting this area, jump to hit the Save Block and save your progress. Near the Save Block you’ll see a Not-Bottomless Hole#2.
Into the Woods!
This next area is larger than the previous ones, and there are several secrets hidden throughout. Continue walking right; you’ll come across dark green thorns. They’ll hurt Mario if he touches them, and the patch is too big to jump over. Here you can also see two Not-Bottomless Holes (#3 & 4) and a ?-Block as well. You’ll be able to take care of each one! Start by tossing a few handfuls of confetti to fix Not-Bottomless Hole#3 right below the thorn patch. This makes it easier for you to walk along the right side of the thorn patch. Now that you’ve made it to the other side, toss some more confetti to fix the Not-Bottomless Hole#4 (you can Hammer the tree next to you if you need more confetti). Once fixed, you’ll be able to reach the ?-Block, which contains 1,000 coins. Leave the way you came in, and then continue toward the foreground to find Not-Bottomless Hole #5.
As you follow the path toward the right, you’ll notice a treasure chest on a cliffside above. You’ll have to do a couple of things first before you’ll be able to reach it – so we’ll get to it soon. To the bottom of the path, you’ll see Not-Bottomless Hole#6 beside the tree at the edge of the cliff. Toss some confetti to fix it and receive some coins. As you pick up the coins, be careful not to step on the thorns at the left side of the screen.
It may be hard to notice, but there is a Hidden Block floating inside the area with the thorns. Like the Treasure Chest, you’ll be able to get it soon. Continue going right until you reach a small open area. This area will feature a mini-game shortly. But first, you must trigger it. You need to reach the area in the background that has the large pine trees with dangling vines. To do this, jump onto the fallen log at the wall, then hop left onto the small ledge, and then up once more to reach the area above. Each tree here has a dangling vine. We’ll go counter-clockwise through what happens for each one.
Walk up to the vine of the tree closest to you. Press and hold A to pull the vine. Doing so will cause a large coin to drop. Next, walk over to the right to reach the next closest vine. Pulling it will cause leaves to fall onto the open area from earlier. This allows you to play a matching memory mini-game. Check out the mini-game section below for more info. Continue toward the right again and you’ll find Not-Bottomless Hole #7.
Fixing it gives you coins and access to pull the next vine. This tree drops a Faded Fire Flower item. You’ll be able to restore it later in the level. Now, head toward the background to the next tree with coins beside it. This tree is necessary for progressing the story forward. Pull the vine three times to make some interesting things happen. After the third pull, the log being held up will fall and roll to the cliffside. This allows you to reach the next area – but there is still one more vine that can be pulled, though doing so seemingly does nothing other than make a crow sound. On the wall to the left of this tree is Not-Bottomless Hole #8. You may barely see that there are several coins inside the hollowed-out log. You can enter the log through the back to pick up all the coins. Don’t forget to do the Mini Game before heading to the area with the golden sphere above!
In Whispering Woods there is a mini-game you can do to get some coins and other items. You must hammer the leaves on the ground to flip them over. Match the icons with its respective leaf. Once you’ve cleared all the leaves, a Super Star appears. This makes you invincible for about 20 seconds of playtime. Use the Super Star to reach the chest on the left containing Collectible Treasure No.1 Peach’s Castle and Hidden ?-Block containing 1,000 coins. Jump onto the thorny ledges in the background and go left to reach the chest. Then, tilt the L-Stick down to run to the foreground and when you get to the square patch on the ground, jump! This reveals the Hidden ?-Block. Jump again to get the coins and the run to the right to get out of the thorns before the Super Star’s effect ends! The mini game resets as soon as you leave the Whispering Woods. You can replay the mini game any time you return to this spot. Clearing out all the leaves always earns you a Super Star. Check out the video below to see how to get both use the Super Star to get both rewards.
To reach the this area above, hop onto the small ledge in front of the log. Hop onto the log and then once more to the left to reach the top area. Once you’re here, it’s easy to get distracted by the large golden sphere in the middle. However, walk toward the foreground to find Not-Bottomless Hole#9 at the edge of the left bottom corner. You can Hammer the bushes, flowers, and trees to refill your confetti supply.
The Golden Sphere has a vine on it, but you won’t be able to pull it until you Hammer the trunk of the tree directly behind the sphere. This causes a Magic Circle to appear next to the vine allowing you to use the 1000-Fold Arms and pull the vine down. After a couple of attempts, the sphere will open and drop a Shriveled Seed. If you recall the lake that fixed things earlier, that’s where you’ll need to go to get the seed restored (as well as the shriveled items you collected)!
Before leaving this area, follow the right edge of the cliff toward the background to find Not-Bottomless Hole#10. It’s a big one, which means lots of confetti – but also lots of coins in return! But that’s not all, the Hole is blocking you from reaching the ?-Block (contains 1,000 coins) at the far right edge of the cliff. To refill your confetti, hammer the tree right next to Mario, and it will also drop a small bag with extra confetti. Once you’ve gotten the ?-Block, exit the area by walking into the misty gap in the background.
This area contains a large tree stump at the center and a path on the right bottom corner of the screen. There isn’t much you can do at the moment, so go through the path. Magically you’ll return the way you entered before – you’re in a Lost Woods situation! You need to leave the area again. Eventually Olivia will comment about being lost and suggest you sit on the tree stump. Hop onto the tree stump to trigger a cutscene and meet Grandsappy.
Turns out the Whispering Woods are named that because the trees are literally whispering. You’ll now be able to talk to each tree you encounter as well! Fun Fact – each tree has its own unique dialogue.
Grandspappy needs the Soul Seed to get better. Luckily, that shriveled seed you found inside the golden sphere might be useful, but you’ll need to find the lake that restored things. With the mist cleared, you can now access the path at the bottom left corner of the screen. Head through it to reach the next area.
After Meeting Grandsappy
Follow the path toward the foreground to eventually reach a Save Block, and right in front of it find Not-Bottomless Hole#11 and in front of that, Hole#12! Be sure to use the Save Block after fixing the two holes. Continue down the path and you’ll be am-BUSHED (…cus they were in a bush… ;-P) by some Origami Goombas. This will trigger a Wave Battle and Olivia will review the battle mechanics with you. Follow along with her coaching to successfully complete the battle. After the battle, continue your way along the path. Not-Bottomless Hole#13 is blocking your progress.
Once you’ve repaired the hole and continued down the path, an Origami Goomba will fall from the tree on the left and charge at you for a battle. Remember that you can smack an enemy with your Hammer right before the battle initiates; doing so will allow you to deal extra damage to it before the battle begins.
This battle is a little different because the enemies are now much more scattered. This introduces the Ring Moves Counter on the right side of the screen. Depending on the battle, you may be able to move multiple rows of rings before an attack. Keep in mind that there is a timer (located at the top right of the screen) counting down. This displays how much time you have available for all of your ring movements. For example, in this battle, use L then press A to select the second-row ring. Move it one space clockwise to line up the Goomba between the first and third one. Press A to confirm. Now use L, then press A to select the final-row ring. Move it clockwise to line up the final Goomba and press A to confirm. With them all lined up, you’ll get a 1.5x damage bonus and be able to defeat them all by using your Boots.
After the battle, walk up to the tree in which the Goomba was hiding. Talk to it to gain a bunch of coins. Continue down the path. You’ll be prompted to press X for an Olivia Hint. She points out that you’re next to the spring (lake) that restores things. As you continue down, you’ll be rushed by an Origami Goomba that appears from a nearby shrub. This triggers another battle, which adds a new mechanic – Number of Actions. First you’ll want to move the third-row ring counter-clockwise so it lines up with the other three Goombas. For this battle, Mario has two actions available after the movement phase. This allows for two attacks! You’ll be able to attack the line of four Goombas with your Boots and then select the Hammer to attack the group of side-by-side Goombas.
After the battle, turn toward the spring to find Not-Bottomless Hole#14 to the left of the tree and Hole#15 a little farther left down the path at the bottom edge. Don’t walk toward the spring yet; instead, continue traveling left along the path. Near the cliffside you’ll see Not-Bottomless Hole#16, and after a couple of hops up, you can find Hole #17 on the right edge of the cliffside. Hit the tree next to Hole#17 to get some extra confetti. Continue left until you reach the chest containing Collectible Treasure No.2 Mushroom.
Now, go back toward the right, to the ledge that protrudes near the center of the spring (lake). Once there, you’ll be prompted to press A. Olivia will ask you to toss the Shirved Seed into the spring. Select it from the menu. It will emerge from the spring as the fully restored Soul Seed –just what Grandsappy needed! Walk over and grab the seed. You can now walk to the ledge again to and toss any of the shriveled items you gained earlier into the spring and restore them. You have to do each, one at a time, and must pick up the restored item before tossing the next shriveled item into the spring.
Now it’s time to rush back up the path to see what happened to Grandsappy. After a brief chat, you’ll be able to toss confetti to restore Grandsappy’s face. This is Not-Bottomless Hole#18! Once his face is back, talk to Grandsappy, give him the Soul Seed, and enjoy the show!
After the performance, Grandsappy will reveal the exit and allow you to leave. When you reach the new area hit the Save Block, then Hammer the fence on the far right to knock it down and continue following the path. Fix Not-Bottomless Hole#19 in the middle of the road. After fixing it, walk up to the yellow flower behind it. Jump to reveal a Hidden ?-Block. Continue along the road – after a small distance, you’ll encounter a folded up Toad trapped in a shrub. Walk up to the shrub and hit it with your Hammer. This will shake the Toad(#1) free.
Repeatedly bash the Toad with your Hammer to straighten all the creases away. After being nice and flat, Toad informs you of other Toads that were attacked and mentions that after saving them, they’ll come to cheer for Mario during battles. They can also help Mario in battles for a modest fee, of course. After this interaction, you’ll now be able to find the Hidden Toads in each world you explore. Like with Not-Bottomless Holes and Treasures, you can see your progress in the pause menu by pressing + and viewing the Map tab.
When you reach the area with the tents, you’ll see Not-Bottomless Hole#20 to the left of the bottommost tent. After fixing the hole, you can walk up to the blue zipper of the tent and press A to open it. Inside, you’ll find a large bag of confetti. Open the first tent on the left to rescue Toad#2 inside. Use your Hammer to flatten them back to normal.
-Sidenote: if you don’t like the music that’s currently playing, Hammer the tree with the speaker on it. Doing so will cause the speaker to break off and stop playing music!
You may notice there is a bug on the left rope of the swing set. That’s actually the Toad! Defeat the Origami Goomba on the swing. After the battle, Hammer the swing set. This causes the Toad-bug to move to the right pole of the swing set. Once it’s there, Hammer it to rescue Toad#3!
Take a break from Toad rescue to fix Not-Bottomless Hole#21 to the right of the swingset. This will also fix the stump and allow you to hop onto it and grab the coin on top. Continue hopping up the stumps to reach the ?-Block containing 1,000 coins.
Take the Time to Sit
Continue back to the path and travel right, crossing over the musical bridge. You’ll reach a couple of steps that lead to a bench above. Go up and allow Olivia to describe how you can use benches to heal HP. After a brief sit, continue traveling right.
After reaching the area below the steps, you’ll see a Toad stuck inside a tree stump in the foreground. Press and hold A to free Toad#4. After the rescue, they’ll mention wanting to start a campfire. You can’t do that just yet. That’ll be a revisit to this place in the future. Don’t continue along the path yet because there are still a bunch of secrets! Walk toward the foreground to the left of the woodstacks next to a big tree at the edge of the cliff. There’s a shrub behind the tree. Hammer it and stand where the bush was. Jump to reveal a Hidden ?-Block! Hammer the tree to cause a Toad-bug to lower. Hit the Toad-bug to rescue Toad#5. Stay in the foreground and head right. In the area with the fences, there’s an Origami Goomba to battle. After completing the battle, go up toward the table area and spread confetti to fix Not-Bottomless Hole#22.
Take out the Origami Goomba sitting at the picnic table. After the battle, look under Goomba’s chair and pull Toad#6 free. It may be hard to see, but the table on the right has a white dinner plate on it. That, however, is actually Toad#7. Hammer the plate to rescue Toad#7. Make your way to the left side of the picnic area to find Not-Bottomless Hole#23.
As you make your way back towards the right, you’ll find Toad#8 stuck in a shrub near the fences. You may have noticed a coin floating in the background behind the hedges. Walk up to the cabin and then go left to access a small ledge. Use your Hammer to rescue Toad#9 who’s folded on the ground, below the floating coin.
You won’t be able to use the door to enter the cabin because the owner who runs the place is missing. It’ll be awhile until you’re able to find that missing Toad. Instead, while you’re on the front deck of the cabin, walk over to the wood pile on the right side and toss several handfuls of confetti to fix Not-Bottomless Hole#24. If you followed along with this guide, Congrats(!); you should receive a notification on the top-right corner of the screen informing you that you got 100% of the Not-Bottomless Holes in Whispering Woods! But we’re not done; there are plenty of other secrets left to find! While you’re on the roof of the shed, hop over toward the background and hammer the ?-Block on the ground to receive 100 coins. Stand on top of that ?-Block and jump to reveal a HIdden ?-Block containing 1,000 coins! Then, use the tree stump on the bottom right corner of the screen to help you hop over the hedges and get back to the other side.
Walk to the front of the shed and pull Toad#10 out of the wood pile. After the rescue, they’ll mention the square patch of grass on the ground. Stand on the square and jump to reveal a Hidden ?-Block! Jump once more to hit it and receive some confetti. Revealing the Hidden Block also causes the creases to go away – that was nice of you! If you look at the cabin, you’ll spot that one of the handing flower pots has no flowers growing. Stand under that flower pot and jump to cause a flower to grow. But, you probably guessed it, that’s not a flower. Walk up to the deck and hammer the flower to rescue Toad#11!
Those are all the Whispering Woods secrets that are available for us to access at this time! To reach the exit of the Whispering Woods, just follow the path down and toward the right of the campsite to reach Toad Town!
